Decluttering Services

Got too much stuff?

Clutter getting you down?

Feeling overwhelmed by your possessions?

Clutter can be more than a distraction.

It can cause stress (thereby affecting health), diminish ability to focus (literally affecting brain productivity), and reduce happiness.

“In the scope of a happy life, a messy desk or an overstuffed coat closet is a trivial thing, yet I find – and I hear from other people that they agree – that getting rid of clutter gives a disproportionate boost to happiness.” ~ Gretchen Rubin

If you are ready to get rid of some clutter and would like some help, I would love to work with you!

I started working with people to clear their clutter while living in London. Even there, where people had considerably less and lived in much smaller spaces than here in the Midwest, people were wanting to pare down and clear out.

“Why call Cheryl for help with decluttering? Because she’s inspirational and makes getting rid of stuff seem easy! As a self-professed pack rat, stuff is my life… but spending a few hours with Cheryl before a move made me realize that getting rid of clothes that don’t fit and paperwork I no longer need actually made me feel happier, more organized, and generally more in control of my life. Doing it on my own felt impossible, but with Cheryl’s gentle encouragement, it was painless.”  ~ Amy S.

My Story

When we moved from St Paul, Minnesota to London in 2007, we got rid of about 90% of our possessions.

Now, I’m not a minimalist. I’m more of a pack-rat. I like stuff. This wasn’t natural for me!

But a few years earlier I had read a book on decluttering during a road trip and realized I was holding on to way way too much. I came home and filled 8 large garbage bags of clothes and other things to donate! That was the start of my decluttering journey.

With this international move, I knew I didn’t want to pay the expense of moving all that stuff or dealing with unnecessary possessions in London. So I went through a 2 month process of letting go of everything I didn’t think we would need or that I didn’t totally, absolutely love.

When working with decluttering clients, I use this experience and the lessons it taught me to support their process of letting go. I also draw from the many personal development trainings I have done over the past 17 years, my organizational skills, and my knowledge of making space functional and beautiful from my interior design training.

I really enjoyed the experience and felt greatly supported by Cheryl throughout. I felt that the clear space has helped my energy to flow better; it has inspired me to get clarity and focus to continue by myself. I have also learnt from Cheryl about some rituals that could help me with breaking emotional attachments to personal belongings that no longer serve any purpose in my life. Cheryl is a fantastic motivator, thanks to her friendly and helpful attitude, and has a great knowledge and understanding in the area of personal development. ~ Anna S.

What to expect?

My approach is gentle and based on your needs and goals.

At our decluttering sessions we’ll take some time to identify what you want for your space and define a doable area for the amount of time available. Then we’ll dig in and get our hands dirty!

As we start moving through your stuff, you may find that many things are easy to get rid of. Then some may be harder to deal with. Sometimes there are beliefs attached to items that need to be unearthed or emotions that need to be honored.

I function as your guide and coach for this process.

I help keep you focused on the established goal. I watch the energetic responses to items and ask additional questions when it seems necessary, sometimes using a personal discovery tool from my bag of tricks to further clarify the energetic attachment to an object.

But I don’t tell you what to do. Ok, sometimes I might encourage strongly, but it is always your choice whether to keep or let go of an item.

I also don’t judge! Some people are embarrassed by their clutter but believe me I have those corners that need attention too. I also know how life can get out of control sometimes, and how hard it can be to let go of certain items. Sometimes these things have their own timeline that needs to be respected. Other times a few questions or a ritual can help release attachments.

At the end of the session we’ll create a plan to dispose of whatever we can right away. Clients often want to do this themselves, but I can support you in this if you would like. This might just involve taking it to the garbage or recycling, or bagging things up and donating them. The point is to get it out of your home as quickly as possible We will also create a plan for any other items left.

What I really valued was Cheryl being there to ensure I actually did the decluttering in the first place. Being held accountable is an amazing thing! We went through a number of boxes – things which have been sitting there since I moved, but I haven’t had the enthusiasm to deal with alone. Cheryl provided emotional support and guidance as I went through them. She was really encouraging and made sure everything was concluded nicely by the end of the session – there were few loose ends, and the ones they were had clear action points on how to finish up. It felt like we were in it together for the whole task! ~ Cate Trotter

Sessions

Ready for some help?

In-person sessions are available for anyone within 25 minutes of my home in St Paul (or farther afield with additional trip charge). We’ll assess your needs, work together to identify priorities and goals, and then dive in and really start clearing out stuff. I’ll guide, ask questions, and assist however I can, but you’ll be the one making the decisions on what to let go. I can help haul away smaller items as well (for an additional charge).

Phone consults are a way to get virtual support. We’ll talk through your situation, identify blocks and embedded beliefs around your stuff, and create a plan for you to move forward.
